Workbasket June 1948 pgs 7-8

This pattern features the special onion ring join.

The special onion ring join has been studied before here at tatting @BellaOnline.com. There are many patterns using it to practice the technique. This pattern is the oldest one I have in the files at this time.

Today we have several aids to go by. Please see:

onion ring join example by G. Seitz

This square medallion begins with a classic rosette style center using a center ring with one less picot, a mock picot to climb out and several row of chains from which we can climb out again (all without cutting the thread) into the last row with the onion ring joins.

No KNOTS needed!

If the front of the medallion were a clock face, pay particular attention to the ends of the chains at the 5:30 and noon positions. Marked in red so you can spot them easily, these are the two positions where you climb out and do NOT cut the threads.

One medallion using shuttle/needle and ball of thread or two shuttle, begin by tatting the inner center ring.

Center ring 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 clr, make mock picot to climb out.

CH 6 + (lock join to next picot of ring), repeat twice

Following joins are into the same picot, or into the thread on the back of the picot.

CH 9 + (lock join to next picot of ring), repeat twice

In same manner, CH 12 + (lock join to next picot of ring), repeat twice

The last row of chains; CH 4 - 3 - 3 - 4 + same place; repeat 3 times or
tat last chain up to last picot then make a split of only 4 ds and climb out through the picot into a onion ring.

Leave just a little bit of thread space and tat the smaller inner ring first.

R 4 very small picot (vsp) 4 clr. Rotate ring 90 degrees.

Bring one thread over the other ring and one thread under (creates ease to work)

Onion ring chain 6 + (ORJ) 6 clr rw

CH 8 - 8 rw

Inner ring 4 - 4 clr rotate 90 degrees

CH 6 + (ORJ) clr rw

CH 8 - 8 and repeat around.

To make a larger piece, join motifs by the last row picots.

After the # of individual motifs has been reached, continue with a finishing round of just chains on only the outermost row.
